Yesterday on our way home, I saw something that broke my heart into a million pieces. On the road in front of us was a truck pulling a trailer w/ two cows. The driver must have hit a bump. The trailer disconnected from the truck at 60 mpg, swerved, rolled and literally bounced 40 feet into the mangrove with the animals inside. I ran out of the car desperately wanting to help and immediately felt a sense of dread because I can’t just scoop up cows and take them to the vet. Also it’s very likely they were on their way to slaughter anyway.

The animals had a look or terror in their eyes I have never witnessed before. Pure and absolute terror. How unnatural to be traveling at such a speed and then being thrown from a vehicle only to be lassoed and dragged by their horns back to the road. They walked over to each other and nuzzled heads!!! They. Nuzzled. Heads! They were seeking comfort. Like two people hugging after something traumatic.

It was a reminder that there is no difference between dogs, cats, cows, pigs or chickens. They all love, feel pain, experience loss and suffer greatly when abused.

We owe it to all animals to be kind to them. Don’t eat them. Don’t drink their milk. Don’t wear their skins. Don’t buy products tested on them. Don’t be the cause of their suffering.

Every single one of us has the power to change the world.
