  • Meet Heather & Gil

What started as a dream of a quieter life in Mexico became something neither of us could have imagined.

Today, Beach Dog Rescue is an off-grid sanctuary in rural Yucatán, providing safety, medical care and second chances to dogs who have nowhere else to turn.

  • The Life We Thought We Were Building

In 2016, we left New Jersey and moved to Mexico in search of a simpler life.

What we didn't expect was how deeply we would be affected by the dogs struggling to survive in our community.

Some were abandoned. Others were injured, sick or simply trying to make it through another day on the streets.

At first, we helped when we could. Then everything changed.

    We Met Pinto

One day, we came across a dog who would change the course of our lives. His name was Pinto.

He was in desperate condition and clearly needed help. We brought him to a veterinarian and did everything we could to give him a chance.

Despite our efforts, Pinto didn't survive.

Losing him was heartbreaking, but it also became a turning point. We realized there were countless dogs just like Pinto who needed someone to notice them, care for them, and fight for them.

Standing beside him, we made a promise: we would do everything we could to help the dogs who came after him.

Beach Dog Rescue was born from that promise.

  • Building Something Bigger

  • From One Dog to Hundreds

What began with one dog quickly became something much bigger.

After Pinto, we started helping other dogs in need. One rescue became two. Two became ten. Before long, our home had become a refuge for dogs recovering from injury, illness, neglect and abandonment. As the need grew, so did our commitment.

Today, Beach Dog Rescue operates an off-grid sanctuary in rural Yucatán, provides medical care and rehabilitation for vulnerable dogs, supports large-scale spay and neuter initiatives and works with rescue partners across North America to help dogs find loving homes.

What started with one dog has grown into a community of supporters, volunteers, adopters and advocates working together to create a brighter future.

    Meet Karla

Three years ago, Karla moved to the Yucatán from central Mexico to pursue her lifelong passion for rescuing and protecting street dogs.

As Shelter Manager, Karla oversees the day-to-day care of the dogs, helping ensure they are safe, healthy and loved while they wait for their second chance. She knows every dog by name, celebrates every milestone and is often the first person to earn the trust of dogs who have never experienced kindness before.

Her patience, dedication and deep love for animals make life better for every dog who comes through our gates. We are incredibly lucky to have her as part of Beach Dog Rescue.

  • Rescue Looks Different Out Here

Access to veterinary care, transportation, supplies and other resources can look very different than they do in larger cities.

Every day requires creativity, adaptability and a willingness to solve problems as they arise.

While the challenges can be significant, the sanctuary provides something many dogs have never experienced before: safety.

And sometimes, safety is where healing begins.
