  • Why We Do This

The dogs you see thriving today often started in very different circumstances.

This is the reality many dogs face in Yucatán and why Beach Dog Rescue exists.

  • The Reality for Many Dogs

The dogs who arrive at Beach Dog Rescue often come from difficult situations.

We meet dogs who have been abandoned, neglected, injured or left for dead.

Some have never received veterinary care.

Some have spent years surviving on the streets.

Some arrive carrying the physical and emotional scars of their past.

These are the dogs who need us most.

  • Stories That Stay With Us

The reality of rescue is not always easy to see.

The images below contain graphic content that some viewers may find distressing.

Side-by-side photos of Forty during treatment and after recovery in his forever home.

    Forty

Baby Forty was found with a horrific injury to his paw. Like so many dogs and puppies who call the streets home, he was likely run over and left to die.

Thankfully, a local rescuer found him and contacted us. After a lengthy hospital stay with our partner veterinarian, Forty came home to the sanctuary to start a new life.

Sadly, the paw was too badly injured and amputation was the only option. But his will to survive was stronger than any injury.

Today, Forty lives with his family in Oregon. He is loved beyond measure.

Side-by-side photos of Tigrilla before rescue and after recovery, showing her transformation following medical treatment and care.

    Tigrilla ("Tiggy")

Tigrilla was hit by a car with such force that it knocked both of her eyes out of their sockets.

We don't know how long she was left alone on the street. When she was finally rushed to the hospital, there was nothing that could be done to save her eyes.

We briefly debated whether to move forward with surgery or humanely euthanize her. Could a dog with no sight still have a good quality of life?

We decided that because she was young, she deserved the chance to find out.

Today, Tiggy is thriving with her moms in Ontario. She goes everywhere with her family: hiking, biking and even ice skating in a special dog backpack.

Tiggy is the light of their lives and we are grateful every day that we made the right decision for the sweetest little pup.

Side-by-side photos of Chapita before rescue and after recovery, showing her journey from neglect to health and safety.

    Chapita (now Luna)

Chapita was found on the street struggling to survive.

This is what mange looks like. Beneath the missing fur and damaged skin is a dog whose body has been pushed to its limits.

On the streets, even a small health problem can quickly become a major one. Without food, medical care, or shelter, the immune system weakens and mange takes hold.

It is heartbreaking, but it is also incredibly common among homeless dogs.

Chapita's story is a reminder that many of the dogs we rescue are suffering from conditions that are entirely treatable when help arrives in time.

  • These stories are not unusual.

They are the reason Beach Dog Rescue exists.

  • Not Every Story Has a Happy Ending

The hardest part of rescue is knowing we can't save them all.

We meet dogs whose lives have been marked by neglect, injury, abandonment and suffering.

Sometimes all we can offer is comfort, safety and love for whatever time they have left.

Those dogs matter too. And they deserve to be remembered.

That is why we keep showing up.
